「大学（東京外国語大学）では、英語よりも、将来性が見込めると感じたスペイン語を選びました。勉強を続けるうちに、その面白さを強く感じるようになったと思います。
スペインでも、主にはマドリードですが、何箇所かで数年間過ごしました。直近では、一年間のサバティカルで、コンプルテンセ大学で研究をし、この春に帰国したばかりです。
一年間はあっという間で、毎回のことですが、今回の滞在もとても満喫しました。僕は日本人でありながら、日本のほうが異様だなあ、と想うことが多いです。スペイン人の生活の仕方、人生の価値観というものは、共感できるものが多いです。
例えば、日本では「顧客至上主義」という考えがあると思います。お金を出して、サービスなり商品を購入しているのですから、お客様ありきの商売、雇用だ、という概念が当然のように根底にあるのが日本だと思います。ですから、２４時間営業も、年始年末の営業も、できるだけ消費者に便利なように、実現する努力を惜しまないのだと思います。一方スペインでは、レストランやお店などで、そのような「お客様第一」というような対応を期待することはできないと思います。よくある洋服やさんでも、入ればすぐに体験できますが、店員さんは、日本みたいにあれこれとかまってくれませんし、逆にひどい態度をとられるのが普通です。レジに行列ができていても、急ぐそぶりもありませんし、平気で休憩している場合もあります。日本人の感覚では、信じられないものだと思いますが、スペインでは、お客さんだからといって、エライわけではなく、店員さんも同じ人として、ただその場では売る側にいる、というだけなのです。ですから、皆と同じように自分の生活があり、大切にしているものがある店員さんの生活も大切にするため、閉店日も普通にありますし、年末年始に無理に開店してお客様のために頑張る、なんてこともしないのです。これは完全に価値観、と言いますか、視点の違いですので、どっちが良くて悪い、というものではありません。でも、こういう背景があるわけですから、スペインのような国で、日本と同じサービスレベルを求めたり、期待すること自体が無理があるのだと思います。僕はスペインのような考え方は、全くおかしいとは思いません。人を人として扱っている、まさにあるべき姿なんじゃないかな、と感じるくらいですよ。
また、スペインは、国の経済状況がかなり悪化していて、ユーロ圏でも懸念されている国の一つになっています。雇用状況や物質的な豊かさは、日本と比較にならないものだと思います。が、それなのに、実際にスペインに行ってみると、人々の様子は、そこまで悲観的には見えません。どうも、それなりに生活を楽しんでいるように見えます。彼らは、幸せに生きる術を知っているのだと思います。遠くから満員電車で通勤して、仕事をする、というのが当たり前のようになっている日本の生活習慣は、きっとスペイン国民の目には、なぜそんなに苦労して日々を生きるのかな？と不思議に映るのではないでしょうか。もっとシンプルに、ストレスがあまりないような生活を、明るく楽しめるのがスペインの良さじゃないかな、と想います。僕は、そんなスペインの文化がとても好きです。日本が僕の国ですし、今はこちらで生活していますが、またいつでもスペインで生活したい、という気持ちを持っています:-)。」
Elegí español para mi campo del universidad porque pensaba que sería más prometedor que inglés como idioma global. Y me gusto más como aprendí la idioma.
Vivia en España, en gran parte en Madrid por unos años. Este primavera, regresé a Japón después un año de sabático.
Siendo japonés, a veces siento que unas cosas son estrañas en Japón. Pienso que siento simpatía por manera de españoles o sus estilo de vida.
Por ejemplo, hay filosofía general como “clientes ante todo” en Japón. Se debe dar prioridad a clientes como ellos pagan y compran los artículos o servicios. Por eso, operación de veinicuatro horas puede ser disponible para utilidad por clientes. Por otra parte, no se podrá esperar tal concept en España. No será difícil saberlo cuando se visita cualquiera tienda. Los vendedores no necessariamente tienen ganas ayudarle, o podrán ser arrogantes. Cuando los clientes hacen cola, los vendedores no darán prisa, o quizás descansarán. En España, los clientes no son considerado como muy importante. Solamente hay personas que trabajan como vendedores en la tienda, pero por supuesto ellos son humanos mismos también. Evidentemente, tienen sus vidas y los queridos. Por eso, sus vidas deben ser respetado y ellos no deberían trabajar tan duro solamente para dar prioridad a los clientes. Es solamente una diferencia de punto de vista del dos culturas. No es que uno es mejor que otro. Pero, creo que el sentido común español no es nada mal, si no más natural como un hombre es tratado como así.
Se le conoce que la economía español ha estado estancado y ahora el país es uno de los más preocupados en la zona Euro. El empleo y la abundancia material son incomparable con los de Japón. Sin embargo, la gente española no parece tan pesimista si no disfrutando su vida. Creo que saben como vivir con alegría. La gente española podría preguntarle porque japonéses tienen que vivir sus vidas con tan gran esfuerzo con sufrimientos como largo tiempo solo para ir a la oficina en tren completo. Una vida sencilla y sin estress. Eso es lo que españoles pueden disfrutar. Y a mi me gusta la cultura española. Japón es mi país, y vivo aquí ahora. Pero, estoy siempre listo para volver ahí y vivir en España en cualquier momento en mi vida.
I chose Spanish rather than English for my major of university (The Tokyo University of Foreign Studies) as I thought it would be much more promising as a global language. And in fact I enjoyed the language more as I deepened my study.
I have experience living in Spain, mainly in Madrid for some years and I just came back this spring from a year of sabbatical there.
Being a Japanese citizen, I sometimes find certain things to be strange about Japan. I think I can rather empathize with Spanish way of thinking or their life style.
For example, Japan has the “customer-first policy” as general philosophy. Customers have to come first as they are the ones who pay money to purchase goods or services to have the business kept running. That’s why, round-the-clock operation or the year-end services are available for the sake of customers’ convenience. On the other hand, you won’t be able to expect such concept in Spain. It won’t be that difficult to experience that if you stop by in any store. The shop clerks will not take care of you as you would expect, and they can even be arrogant to you. Even when people make a queue, the clerks wouldn’t hurry up, or rather, they could have a rest. In Spain, customers are not regarded as higher positions. The clerks just happen to be on the side of sellers in the store, but they are the same human beings.
Obviously they have their own life and what they are care about. That’s why their lives must be respected and wouldn’t need to work so hard just to prioritize services for the customers. This is totally just a difference in the viewpoint of the two cultures. It’s not that one is better than the other, but I think the Spanish common sense is nothing wrong, and rather seems to be natural in a way that a human being is treated as it is.
It is well known that Spanish economy has been sluggish and is now one of the most concerned countries in Euro zone. The employment and material affluence are incomparable with that of Japan. However, the people in the country do not seem so pessimistic, but rather enjoying their lives. I think they know how to live happily. Spanish people might wonder how Japanese people have to live a day so hard with such hardships as being squashed in a packed train just to come to office. The simple, and stress-free life. That’s what Spanish people can enjoy, and I like such culture of Spain. Japan is my country, and I am living here now. But I am always ready to go back there and live in Spain anytime in my life.

Professor Ninomiya really understands the country of Spain, its culture and the people so deeply, and knowing all, he likes the country.
That’s why he has also achieved success in his study of Spanish in such a profound level. I do hope that he will further flourish as a researcher of Spanish representing in Japan!
And, when he eventually goes back to Spain to live, I hope he would invite me there;-)!
