Entrevista # 1

記念すべきインタビュー第一弾は気のよいお仲間、ビルさんです★
中国・パナマ・アメリカの３つの文化をもった素敵なお人柄のビルさんに、日本での生活について、主にラテンアメリカ人としての視点を中心にお話を伺いました。
すぐに４つ目の文化を融合した、稀有な方になるのかな＾＾。

Bill was born in Panama and moved to the U.S when he was 15 years old. Since then, he lived there for almost 20 years.
Now he lives in Tokyo with his wife and a son and new born baby!

Bill nació en Panamá y fue a Estados Unidos cuando tenía 15 años. Desde entonces, vivía su vida ahí casí 20 años ý ahora vive en Tokio con su mujer, y dos hijos.

¡Vamos escuchar su historia sobre su vida en Japón y pensamiento sobre todo de su punto de vista como un panameño! 

 ① ¿Piensas que si no hubieras podido utilizar el inglés, tu vida en Japón seria muy dificil?

Si, en primero lugar, el conocimiento de inglés  no es tan difundido en población de japonés como otros países. En general, me encontra menos gente que puede hablar inglés que otros países. Pero, todavía el inlgés es la idioma internaciónal para negocios y hay señales en inglés, y sobre todo, se puede contar un poco con las palabras de origen extranjeros en la forma de Katakana.
Pero, sobre espáñol, lo dudo muchishimo.  Hay mucho poco expocisión de español en general, aunque lo veo mas en chino o coreano. No es tan fácil con inglés hasta en la ciudad Tokio, por eso sería mucho más duro si tendría solo español como manera de comunicación. Sin embargo, no he tenido experiencia demasiado duro sobre comunicación gracias a nivel del servicio estupendo y la gente amable en Japón.

② ¿ Hay algo japonés que piensas sería popular en tu país?

¡Calidad del servicio! Por ejemplo, el sistema transporte publico funciona con mucha eficiencia. Es increíble.

③ ¿Cual fue tu sorpresa más grande en tu vida de Japón?

¡La cultura de trabajo! En general los hombres o esposos trabajan hasta muy tarde y dan su vida para trabajo. Tal vez lo mismo para las mujeres solteras. Pero si se caso la dinámica cambia. El sistema de “allowance” (asignación おこづかい制度☺) controlado por mujeres que tienen responsibilidad para administración de la economía familiar, es muy curioso.
Hay mucho más dedicación en la relación de las personas con sus trabajos por el amor o por la necesidad económica, no lo se. En realidad hoy el dia la palabra “karoshi” ; la muerte por exceso de trabajo, es muy conocida en el mundo, y lo conociaba tambien. Pero, ver la situación practica que posiblemente lo generia me da mucha sorpresa. Nunca he trabajando en Panamá, pero lo se que muchos latinoamericanos dan mucho más importancia a la vida que al trabajo. Sin embargo, como dije antes, gracias a este nivel de diligencia del trabajadors, muchas cosas se realizaban incluyendo la puntualidad del sistema tren. Por ejemplo, con el sistema transporte fantastico, se puede llegar al oficina 10 min antes del reunion, etc que permite la gente trabajar con mucha dedicacion:-)

 ④ ¿ Quieres criar a sus hijos en Japón? ¿Y por que?

No, por largo plazo por lo menos. Mi impresión de los niños de escuela primaria aquí es mucho estrés con la presión del estudio. Como lo dije, mi prioridad es mi vida, mi vida con mi familia, por eso no me gustaría sacrificar mi vida y la vida de mi hijos a nuestro prioridad. Me extraña que los niños de uniformes en el sabado y domingo y pensé es demasiado.

⑤  ¿ Como fue el parto de tu mujer en Tokio?
 　
Creo que en general, el sistema en Japón es más natural. Por ejemplo, el uso de anestético no es tan prevalente como en EE.UU. En el hospital donde mi esposa fue, hasta en la forma de las sugerencias de las enfermeras, les gusta menor intervención de químicos o sustancia artificial durante el proceso . Lo que resulta era el parto más doloroso para ella. Sin embargo, gracias a este proceso, ella tenía una recuperación más fácil. Por eso, hay ventajas y desventajas. Si tuvieramos el tercero hijo, todavía quedaramos en Japón, porque las parteras tienen mucho más conocimiento aquí que en EE.UU. 

⑥  Ultima pregunta... ¿Piensas que habré más oportunidades para japonéses que tienen la competencia   de idioma español? (¡Esta pregunta es para mi!)

Bueno, la gente habla mucho sobre China, India y Brazil, pero fuera de ellos, creo que latinoamerica da muchas oportunidades en general para compañías multinacionales. A pesar de muchos problemas, crecimiento económico ahí es mucho más rápido en comparación con otros lugares incluyendo Japón en pasado. Entonces, creo que hay oportunidades si las compañías japónesas están dispuestas y buscan oportunidades. Sin embargo, pienso que tiene que cambiar la mentalidado por lo menos jefes de las grandes compañías para reformar el mercado cerrado. ¡Pero hay oportunidades!


①　英語が使えなかったら、日本での生活は大変だったと想いますか？

-はい、そもそも他国と比べて英語自体があまり普及されていないと思います。ただ、やはり第二言語ではありますので、ビジネスにおいては多く使われているとは思いますし、道の表示でも英語は見られます。外来語などは日本語でもわかりやすいので助かっています。
でも英語ですらこういう状況ですので、スペイン語だけでは相当大変だったと思います。英語以外ですと、中国語や韓国語のほうが重視されていますし。でも、コミュニケーションにおいて、特別苦労したことはありません。それは、日本の素晴らしいサービスレベルと親切な日本の方のおかげだと思っています。

②  日本にあるもので、ビルさんの国で人気が出そうだな、と想うものはありますか？

-サービスの質です！例えば、交通機関の効率の良さは素晴らしいです。

 ③ 日本で生活してみて、一番びっくりしたことはなんですか？

-仕事への姿勢です！一般的に男性・夫は夜遅くまで一生懸命仕事をしています。未婚の女性もそうかもしれません。家計を牛耳る女性のおこづかい制というものは面白いなと思いました☺。
日本の方は仕事に対してとても献身的です。会社への忠誠心か、経済的な必要性に駆られてか、は私にもわからないのですが。今では「過労死」という言葉は世界的にも知られていますし、私も知ってはいましたが、実際にそれが可能性として起こりえるような状況を見るというのは私にとっても驚きでした。ただ、やはりこの勤勉さのおかげで、日本では沢山のことが可能になっていると思います。例えば交通機関の正確さもそうでしょう。この素晴らしい交通機関のおかげで、例えばですが、会議の１０分前にオフィスに到着できて、仕事も効果的に、効率的にこなせるのではないでしょうか。

④ 子育ては日本でしてみたいですか＆その理由も教えてください。

-長期的にはあまりしたいとは思いません。特に日本の小学生の印象なのですが、勉強しなくてはいけないというプレッシャーをだいぶかけられていると感じます。やはり私は私生活、家族との生活を優先しますので、それを犠牲にすることはできないのです。日本で週末も制服を着た子供たちを見かけ、とても驚きました。

⑤最近奥様がご出産されましたが、東京での初出産、いかがでしたか？！

-日本の出産は自然分娩が一般的なのかな、という印象です。例えば、麻酔の使用が米国と比べるとそれほど普及していないみたいですね。妻が入院した病院では、看護婦さんたちの考え方も同様で、なるべく出産時に薬などを投与するべきではない、という方針でしたから、出産自体は非常に苦しいものになりました。ただ、その分産後の回復は早かったですよ。ですので、一長一短だと思います。でも、もし３人目が産まれるとしたら、日本での出産を選ぶと思います。医師だけでなく、助産婦さんも、とても専門的で知識があり、頼りになったのです。安心感がありました。

⑥  最後の質問です。スペイン語が使える日本人にとって、チャンスは沢山あるでしょうか？？（これは、私のための質問です＾＾！）

-昨今は、中国、インド、ブラジルが注目されていますが、それ以外では他の南米諸国マーケットが多国籍企業にとって大きなチャンスになると思います。まだまだ課題は沢山ありますが、南米の経済発展の速さは、目を見張るものがあります。日本の企業が、意識をもってチャンスを探し始めれば、可能性は大いにあると思います。ただ、まずは大企業の経営者が今まで閉ざしていたマーケットを開いていくという、思考の転換をしていく必要があると思います。いずれにしても、チャンスはありますよ！

① Do you think your life would have been much harder if you couldn't use English?  

Yes, In general, Japanese people do not seem to be too familiar with using English compared to other countries although it is still regarded as the second language, which is primarily used in business environment. “Katakana” indications that I can see in many places are also helpful, however with regards to Spanish, the exposure is much smaller even compared to Chinese or Korean. As it is already pretty hard living with just English, it would have been much harder if I had just Spanish. However, I personally haven’t had bad experience in terms of communication in Japan thanks to the fantastic service level and warm-hearted Japanese people who are willing to help me.

② What do you think of anything Japanese would be popular in your country?

The quality of service! For example, the public transportation system functions very efficiently. It’s amazing.

③ What was the biggest surprise in your life in Japan?

 Work culture! In general, men or husbands work so much till late and give their lives to work. Maybe it's same for unmarried women. But it seems to change when they get married. The allowance system controlled by women who manage family budget is very interesting.
 I see strong devotion to work for the reason of love to the company or economic needs, that's I am not sure. In fact, the terminology "karoshi" is widely known in the world, and I knew it before. However, observing the situation in reality that could possibly cause it was truly surprising to me. Latin American surely prioritize their lives over work. However, as I said, with this level of diligence of workers, many things have been realized including punctuality of the public transportation system. With this wonderful system, for instance, it's possible to come to office 10 minutes before a meeting, which should allow you to work well and effectively.

④ Would you like to raise your children in Japan?

No, for a long time at least. My impression of children of primary school here is that they are much stressed with pressure of study. As I said, my priority is my life, life with my family. Therefore, I wouldn't like to sacrifice my life or my son's life for our priority. I was very surprised to see children in uniforms on Saturday and Sunday, and thought it was too much.

⑤ Recently your wife had a baby! How was the first delivery in Japan?

In general, I think the Japanese system is more natural. For example, use of anesthesia is not very common as it is in the U.S. In the hospital where my wife was, even the nurses preferred not to use medicine or artificial substance during the process. And, it resulted in much painful operation for her. However, thanks to this process, her recovery was much easier. Therefore, it has advantages and disadvantages. If we would have the third child, we would still choose Japan for the birth, because the midwives have much more knowledge here than in the U.S

⑥ The last question! Do you think Japanese people with Spanish proficiency will have a bright future??
(This is a question for me＾＾!)

Well, although nowadays people talk a lot about China, India and Brazil, after them, I think Latin American countries should provide many opportunities for multinational companies. Despite many problems, the economic growth there is much faster than other countries including Japan. Therefore, only if Japanese companies are ready with a little bit of different mindset, it would open up for promising future. However, at least top management should start having a different view to the market, which has been relatively closed in Japan to today. But, yes, there should be opportunity!
